About Lay Ean
My name is Lay Ean Eng (Kee). I am an amateur cook, a blogger and parenting life coach who just loves her Penang food, especially the peranakan cuisine that she grew up with.
She believes that the kitchen is the most important part of the home – the place to have fun with, and a place where you can connect with your children and family.
Your kitchen is also a place to instill the love of food, as well as empowering the essential skills of cooking and appreciating the value of healthy food with the family.
Lay-Ean believes that everyone, is capable of cooking, and she would like to take the fear out of the kitchen by sharing simple ways of preparing Malaysian dishes that she grew up with. These are for you – whether you are a fellow Malaysian who lives far away from home who has never tried their hands in the kitchen, or time poor parents, students or professionals who love Malaysian dishes.
Lay Ean was born in Penang, Malaysia and came to Australia to study almost 30 years ago, and ended up settling in Australia. She married and lives in the beautiful city of Sydney with her loving and supportive husband, Patrick, and her two adult children, Jonathan and Eileen.
Lay-Ean grew up in a traditional Baba Nonya family (Chinese migrants who intermarried with the locals and settled in Malaysia during the early 1400s), and was the second child of three. She can speak Malay, Mandarin, Hokkien and English. She grew up in a very close-knit family who just loved food; also she came from Penang – which is the heart of “food nuts” in Malaysia.
When her second child, Eileen was born, Lay-Ean decided to become a full time mum. While bringing up her children in Australia, she started blogging about Kids friendly activities, as well as parenting issues (as migrants), through GoKids and GoParents.
She uses her experience to encourage everyone to reconnect to their kitchens and start bringing their traditional dishes back to their long table. Connecting in the kitchen means inviting your children to help with meal preparations, having fun and creating the opportunities to connect and bond with them.
Lay-Ean also enjoys personal development, writing and travelling, while rekindling relationships with family and friends all over the world.
